BAKER'S NURSERIES, INC.
HISTORY
Baker's Nurseries was started around 1910 by its' founder Bert Baker. Bert started growing all kinds of berry plants on his farm in West Hoosick. Many farmers in the area also grew berry plants for him as his own farm was not big enough to grow all he needed. Each year he shipped plants to every state in the nation as well as several countries in western Europe. Somewhere around the late 1930's a fungus disease started to infest the raspberry plants, so it became illegal to ship them interstate. That put an end to the berry business, so at that time Bert started growing ornamental landscape plants on a large scale.
After Ed Baker, Bert's son, joined the business, he started branching out to the landscape business as well as the nursery business.
In 1957 we started renting some farm land on route 22 in Hoosick, NY where the soil structure is much more suitable for digging plants B & B than is the gravel soil in our West Hoosick nursery. In 1974 we purchased the rented land as well as the property directly across route 22 where our Garden Center was built in 1975.
Since the inception of the garden center, we have continuously increased our products & services...Today we offer a complete line of trees, shrubs, annuals, perennials, mulch, topsoil, fertilizers and landscape products, as well as professional installation and advice on installation and maintenance of our products.
