Shown in the first photo is preparation of the sub-base for the wall. Proper construction of the base is important for the structural integrity of a freestanding wall. A 6"- 8" base of crushed stone was placed beneath the first layer of wall stone.
The second photo shows the wall taking form. Many stones will end up being discarded because they are of improper shape or size.
A double faced wall takes twice as many stones to create. The interior spaces between the two faces are filled with crushed stone to give the wall strength.
The final photo shows the double sided wall with capstones at the completion of the wall.
